This detail illustrates the connection of a built-up endwall column to a rigid frame rafter. Built-up columns are fabricated from plate steel rather than standard cee sections, and are typically used when higher load capacities are required at endwall locations, such as for larger door openings, heavier crane loads, or greater building heights.

The rigid frame rafter has a welded clip attached to the flange, which provides the connection point for the built-up endwall column. The column web is positioned against the welded clip and secured with bolts through the pre-punched holes. Unlike standard cee column connections that specify hardware in the detail, this connection requires referring to the endwall drawing for bolt quantity, diameter, and type, as these will vary based on the specific engineering requirements of each building.

When installing, ensure the built-up endwall column is plumb and properly aligned with the welded clip before inserting and tightening all bolts. This connection transfers loads from the rigid frame rafter down through the column to the foundation. Because this connection is to a main rigid frame rafter rather than a lighter endwall rafter, the hardware requirements are typically more substantial to handle the increased loads.
